On May 6, 2020, SCImago Institutions Rankings, a science evaluation resource used to assess and rank academic and research-related institutions worldwide, revealed their ranking results for outstanding universities in research performance, innovation outputs and social impact for 2020.
The universities underwent assessment based on three different indicators grouped as the research factor (composing of 50%), innovation factor (composing of 30%) and societal factor (composing of 20%). Accordingly, SCImago published their ranking results in four different categories named overall rank, research rank, innovation rank and societal rank.
As a result of this year’s rankings, UBU significantly improved its overall rank among higher education institutions on a national scale. In 2019, UBU was ranked #17 but is now ranked #12 on par with Thammasat University. In the same category, UBU ranked #3 among universities located in Northeast Thailand, proving to be one of the leading universities in this part of the country. On an international scale, the university ranked #298 out of all 1369 ranked institutions in Asia and #764 out of all 3897 ranked institutions in the world.
Furthermore, UBU ranked #4 in the country for the innovation rank shortly listed after Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University and Silapoakorn University, respectively. In the world, the university is ranked #464 out of 3897. These results notably present the university’s strength in innovation.
Dr. Thitidech Luetrakul, Vice President for Planning and Organizational Quality Development, shared that SCImago university rankings is widely accepted because of its reliable use of evidence, especially in regard to its journal research publications. To be eligible for ranking consideration, universities must have international collaborations with partners abroad as well as a high number of published articles with good impact factors. As for the innovation factor, the ranking puts an importance on patents, technological impacts as well as innovative knowledge. Therefore, UBU is proud to have ranked among top universities in Thailand and around the world in the 2020 SCImago Institutions Rankings.
